The Lego Movie, co-written and co-directed by Chris Miller ’97 and Phil Lord ’97, “is far more inventive and satirical than you might expect,” writes the Associated Press in its review of the movie that opens in theaters Friday.
Miller and Lord met at Dartmouth and were “drawn together by their similar sense of humor,” the article notes. The two were “well aware of the dim reputation of toy movies. But in their short but rapidly ascending careers, the comic duo has turned weak premises like a 21 Jump Street remake and an adaptation of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs into surprisingly fresh, crowd-pleasing hits,” writes the AP.
