Study: Most Drug Commercials Misleading (Scientific American)

Scientific AmericanA study by researchers at Dartmouth and the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that television advertisements for prescription and over-the-counter drugs are frequently false or misleading, reports Inside Science News Service in an article published by Scientific American.

The study, according to the news service, notes “60 percent of prescription drug ads and 80 percent of over-the-counter drug ads were found to be misleading or false.”

Adrienne Faerber, a Center for Medicine and the Media program fellow at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice and one of the study’s authors, tells Inside Science News Service, “There were cases of blatant lying, but these half-truths form more than half of our analysis.”
