The Wall Street Journal reports that although many in the medical establishment recommend annual mammograms for women over 40, a growing number of critics reject the recommendation, saying the routine exams are not as beneficial as many say they are.
H. Gilbert Welch, a professor of medicine at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, is among those who argue against annual screening, the Journal reports. Welch is a co-author of Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health.
