As the article explains, a reduction in snow and ice cover on the surface of the ocean and land in the Arctic has darkened the surfaces, leading to greater warming in the region. “The Arctic is one of Earth’s mirrors and that mirror is breaking,” says Donald Perovich, an adjunct professor of engineering at the Thayer School of Engineering.
