ReutersReuters reports that Daniela Pelaez ’16, who left Colombia at age 4 to come to Miami, is among hundreds of thousands of young immigrants in the United States expected to sign up for temporary legal status in the U.S. under relaxed deportation rules that went into effect Wednesday, August 15.

Reuters says the permits, which offer “deferred action for childhood arrivals,” protect young, undocumented immigrants from deportation for at least two years if they meet certain requirements.

“It’s like a Band-Aid,” Pelaez tells Reuters. “It’s only temporary and we don’t know what happens in two years time.”

Pelaez begins her first year at Dartmouth next month and hopes to become a heart surgeon, according to Reuters.
